Paint my town red

I came upon these pieces of graff-art when I was in The Valley for an evening shoot. It got me thinking why there aren't more dedicated spaces in Brisbane for this kind of expression. Are we too hell-bent on being a squeaky clean city, void of any real character or soul? I'm not sure about everybody else but I like to see interesting things on what would otherwise be a bland wall - imagine if those giant grey walls of QPAC were painted in a wild way, it's strange that an arena for artistic performance and exhibition be so bland and sterile. Understandably this kind of art isn't right for every part of our city, but at the same time it shouldn't be shut away at the end of town in back alleys (or is that the appeal, that it's sought out rather than shoved in your face?)

  1. Ohhh, i agree with you completely! Especially with the part about QPAC. What a perfect spot for murals! When we saw the equivalent of QPAC in Spain, we both felt a little ashamed, theirs was an absolute masterpiece of a building, so modern and innovative - yet ours is probably one of the most hideous buildings in the city! What a shame.

You're right, we're too hell bent on being a squeaky clean city. There are so many young people in Brisbane who are craving a way to express themselves and make the most of this little country town, yet we are reprimanded when we try.

  2. hey Chris,

    How are things with you?
There's a group called Brisbane Photography, it's on facebook, although you deactived your account. At the moment they are thinking of meeting at Springbrook tambourine. But now they are talking about brisbane zombie walk which starts all at the top part of Roma St Park Lands on 25th of October. I don't know if your interested or not, I am just letting you know.
I will be great to hear from you. Is it possible to get your number?
    All the best to you.
    Magda
